Update the Android operating system version

To update the version of your Android operating system follow these steps:

  1. Go to 'Settings'.
  2. Select 'About device' (if not present, tap on 'System' then 'Advanced').
  3. Choose 'System update(s)'.
  4. On some devices, you then need to tap 'Check for update'.

The instructions and names vary from device to device but they should be similar to the instructions we've provided above. If you need further help, contact the manufacturer of your device.

For some devices, the manufacturer sends out update notifications. If you get one, follow the instructions on your device. You can find more information on upcoming updates on the manufacturer or mobile provider's website. For instance, if you have a Samsung device you can use the 'Smart Switch' computer program from Samsung's website to check for and install updates.

Important:
Before making an update, we recommend backing up your data such as contacts and photos. A software update shouldn't affect your personal data but there are no guarantees.

Use a Wi-Fi connection to make the update, as the data size can be large.
